Primary teacher training with Roehampton University

Train as a teacher based in a school of your choice, while still gaining a PGCE qualification from Roehampton and qualified teacher status.

Why this course?

This course seeks to place schools at the centre of Initial Teacher Education (ITE). Working with University of Roehampton, London South takes a leading role in recruiting trainee teachers and in designing and delivering the training programme.

What you'll learn on this course

This postgraduate qualification gives you the tools to build a successful career in teaching while providing a holistic view of the profession; you will look at the child, curriculum and teacher.

The course will build your confidence in the classroom, your understanding of the wider role a teacher plays and provide you with all the subject knowledge to effectively teach the full curriculum to all age groups of primary school children.

How you'll learn

You will be based in a host school for 32 weeks of the year, which will enable you to develop strong relationships with your school mentor who will oversee your training. You will attend lectures and seminars at Roehampton University throughout terms 1 and 3.

You will be assigned a tutor from Roehampton who will support you with both the practical and academic elements of the course. You will also be part of a large cohort of trainee teachers in South London.

Placements

Students will also complete a short placement in a contrasting school to gain experience in a different setting.

How you'll be assessed

Trainees are assessed against the Teachers' Standards before being recommended for Qualified Teacher Status.

Qualifications needed

  • An undergraduate degree at class 2:2 or above, or equivalent.
  • Grade 4 (C) or above in English, maths and science, or equivalent qualification.
  • We’ll consider candidates with pending GCSEs.
  • We’ll consider candidates who need to take a GCSE equivalency test in English, maths or science.

We are looking for candidates who are passionate and knowledgeable about their specialist subject and keen to have a positive impact on the lives of young people in the Capital.

Other requirements

You will need to complete a DBS check prior to taking up the offer of a place.
