What you'll learn on this course

This postgraduate qualification gives you the tools to build a successful career in teaching while providing a holistic view of the profession; you will look at the child, curriculum and teacher.

The course will build your confidence in the classroom, your understanding of the wider role a teacher plays and provide you with all the subject knowledge to effectively teach the full curriculum to all age groups of primary school children.

London South is offering the following courses in partnership with Roehampton University:

  • Chemistry
  • Computing
  • English
  • Geography
  • Mathematics
  • Music
  • Physics

How you'll learn

Once you have been made an offer for Initial Teacher Training, you will be assigned to a host school in which you will complete the majority of your training.

In the Autumn term you will spend two days in an alternative phase placement, Primary trainees will experience a Secondary setting and Secondary trainees will visit a Primary school. In the Spring term you will spend two days in a primary school. You will also complete a second placement of six weeks, in a partnership school which provides a contrast to your host school. This will ensure that you have the opportunity to teach in diverse educational settings which will greatly enhance your learning experience.

Across the training year you will also experience four Intensive Training and Practice weeks (ITP). ITP weeks focus on specific, foundational, and pivotal areas of the training curriculum. They aim to support trainees to develop their understanding of the interplay between evidence-based theory and their classroom practice. The process engages trainees in critical analysis, application of learning to support their classroom practice and provides focused feedback to aid further development.

Placements

Students will also complete a short placement in a contrasting school to gain experience in a different setting. Working with Inspiring Future Teachers, our partner schools take a leading role in recruiting trainee teachers and in designing and delivering their training programmes.

How you'll be assessed

Trainees are assessed against the Teachers' Standards before being recommended for Qualified Teacher Status.
